How to perform Umrah
A Comprehensive Guide to Performing Umrah
Umrah, a lesser pilgrimage to Mecca, is a spiritually rewarding journey for Muslims. It’s a sunnah (recommended practice) that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which has specific dates. This guide will provide a step-by-step overview of how to perform Umrah.
Intentions (Niyyah)
Before starting any act of worship, including Umrah, it’s crucial to have a sincere intention. Say:
“I intend to perform Umrah for the sake of Allah Almighty.”
Ihram
Ihram is the sacred state that Muslims enter before performing Umrah. It involves specific dress codes and restrictions:
- For Men: Wear two white, seamless garments, one wrapped around the waist (Izaar) and the other draped over the shoulders (Rida).
- For Women: Wear modest clothing that covers the entire body except the face and hands.
Entering the State of Ihram
- Take a Ghusl: Perform a full body cleansing (Ghusl) before entering Ihram.
- Brush Teeth: Cleanse your mouth with a miswak or toothbrush.
- Clip Nails: Trim your nails.
- Remove Perfumes: Avoid using perfumes or scented products.
- Make Niyyah: Form the intention for Umrah.
Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)
- Enter the Masjid al-Haram: Enter the Grand Mosque with respect and reverence.
- Face the Kaaba: Stand facing the Kaaba and say the Talbiyah: “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik. Labbaik La Sharika Laka Labbaik. Inna al-Hamda wa-n-Ni’mata Laka wa-l-Mulk. La Sharika Lak.”
- Start Tawaf: Begin walking counterclockwise around the Kaaba, starting at the Black Stone.
- Kiss the Black Stone: If possible, kiss the Black Stone. If not, point towards it and say “Bismillah Allahu Akbar.”
- Perform Seven Circuits: Complete seven circuits around the Kaaba, reciting specific prayers and dhikr.
- Run Between Safa and Marwa (Sa’y): After Tawaf, proceed to Safa Hill and walk to Marwa, then back to Safa, repeating this seven times.
Ramie (Shaving the Head or Shortening Hair)
- For Men: Shave your head completely or shorten your hair.
- For Women: Trim a small amount of hair from your head.
Tawaf al-Ifada
After Ramie, perform a final Tawaf around the Kaaba.

Throughout Umrah, make sincere dua (supplications) to Allah, seeking forgiveness, blessings, and guidance.
